RS: You recently wrote a fascinating piece for the New York Times about the culture of catching up and hooking up on Thanksgiving Eve. What was the process like in putting that story together?
CM: A lot of anxiety and some pep talks, gchatting my dad (and accidentally gchatting my editor gchats meant for my dad in the process), crying, doubting myself, then finally getting it together and just DOING IT, which is basically how I get most stuff done.
You recently asked Michael Che questions on Facebook about comments he made mocking the video that shined a light on street harassment. I don't know if you were a big Michael Che fan beforehand, but speaking generally, do you find that writing about celebrities can impact your enjoyment of their work?
No, honestly, until I have to write about the Real Housewives of New Jersey at length, I don't think any celebrity coverage I am asked to do will affect my work or my enjoyment of their work. (Also, not a huge Michael Che fan. Fuck that guy and his rude comments.)
I know that you're a big fan of the holiday season. What's your favorite holiday movie/song/food item?
Loaded question! Home Alone 2, a classic! James Taylor's version of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," the best!!!!!!! so many emotions! PIE.
