What is your process like when you work on poems?
My poetic process is sometimes a kind of intense image-collection system. Other times, a storytelling impulse. Mostly, I keep sifting for image and language that keeps me from getting bored. I don’t like being bored.
Any big summer plans?
I’ll be teaching creative kids at summer camps, which I really love. Otherwise, just hanging around my home village of Nyack, New York. This morning, my daughter wrote on our grocery list “potato chips x 9,999.” Challenging any such couch-potato summer-vacation plan is my big plan.
What can people expect from your reading?
I always try to share poems that invite listeners into my quest. No one should be bored! We should hear the collective restlessness of our hearts in a poem.
